Facial Fractures causes:

Facial fractures can be a result of road traffic accidents or falls which can break your jawbones or other parts of the face.

Risk of facial trauma:

Facial trauma causes major deformity, disturbs the way your teeth relate, and can also restrict mouth opening in addition to pain.

If left untreated, the broken bones will not join or may join in an unusual manner leading to a permanent deformity.

Facial fractures can cause a variety of physical, psychological and social effects. Physically, facial fractures can cause pain, swelling, bruising, deformity, and distorted facial features, as well as problems with vision, hearing, speech, and breathing.

Psychological effects can include depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and low self-esteem. Socially, people may experience difficulty with relationships, work, and everyday activities, such as eating and speaking. In some cases, facial fractures can even lead to disfigurement, which can have long-term psychological and social implications.

Therefore, it is of the essence to treat facial fractures swiftly. Facial fractures are diagnosed with the help of 3D digital radiographs or CBCT.

How to treat

Facial fractures can be treated in two ways, closed reduction and fixation or open reduction and internal fixation. The type of treatment will depend on the severity of the fractures. Displaced and multiple fractures have to be fixed internally. In such a case, surgery has to be done in which the bones are brought back to their place and then fixed with titanium plates and screws.

Closed fixation can be done under local anaesthesia. However, surgeries have to be conducted under general anaesthesia, where you are put to sleep and are admitted.

Big swellings and Cysts

Facial swellings can be a result of: infection, cyst, or tumor.
Facial infections, if not treated swiftly, will lead to an increase in swelling, which can curtail breathing and are life-threatening.

How to treat:

In some cases, the infection is drained through a cut or removed totally according to the case and surgeon’s decision. This procedure can be under local anesthesia or general anesthesia.

Cysts and tumors can be located in the bone or only be skin deep. Depending upon the size of the cyst or tumor and the way it is progressing, these surgeries can also be done under local or general anesthesia.

Local anesthesia surgeries are outpatient department surgeries meaning you can go home the same day. Whereas for bigger cysts and tumors, general anesthesia is required to be able to remove the pathology properly. General anesthesia surgeries require admission in a partner hospital and consequently, follow-ups for a few days to ensure your surgery is successful.
