Scaling is the process of using a small, hand-held tool to cleanse teeth of plaque and calculus above and below the gum line. This process is important for oral health because it helps to prevent gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath.
Ultrasonic Scaler is an effective plaque and calculus removal tool. It uses high-frequency ultrasonic waves to remove plaque and calculus from teeth safely on all tooth surfaces.
Brushing and flossing can remove plaque from which calculus forms; however, once formed, calculus is too hard (firmly attached) to be removed with a toothbrush. Calculus buildup can be removed only with ultrasonic tools or dental hand instruments during dental cleaning.
Prophylactic scaling is recommended twice annually as a preventative measure, to remove plaque buildup and reinforce good oral hygiene habits, but it should be performed every 3-4 months on periodontitis sufferers. Though gum disease cannot be completely reversed, prophylactic scaling and calculus removal is one of the tools the dentist can use to effectively halt its destructive progress.
For patients wearing braces, we advise them to schedule their scaling and polishing appointments more frequently to keep their teeth in great health during their treatment.
