DENTAL IMPLANTS

Missing teeth can result from poor oral hygiene, dental caries, gum diseases, and trauma. Living with missing teeth is challenging as it affects chewing, and speech, leads to bone loss and compromises aesthetics. Until now, dentists resolved to use dentures and bridges for tooth replacement. However, thanks to advances in dentistry, we now have a permanent teeth replacement option – Dental Implants.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are screw-shaped fixtures that are placed inside the jawbone through a tiny incision on the gums. It takes over three months for the implant to integrate with the jawbone, after which it forms a firm foundation for the placement of a crown, bridge, or denture. Dental implants are fixed and derive support from the jawbone.

What is the procedure for getting dental implants?

  • The procedure starts with an oral examination and radiography.
  • 3D digital radiographs (CBCT) are taken to analyse the quality and quantity of the bone.
  • Depending on the number of missing teeth, the number of dental implants needed are planned.
  • A digital impression is taken of the upper and lower jaw, and computerized surgical guides are made, which allows for precise placement of the implant during surgery.
  • Local anaesthesia is administered, an incision is made on the gums.
  • Specialized drills are used to create a hole in the bone where the implant is placed, and the site is stitched.
  • In 3 months, the implant will integrate with the jawbone, and the procedure of placement of a prosthesis (crown, bridge or denture) will begin.
  • The prosthesis is then fixed to the implant.

Dental implants require a certain minimum quantity of bone to be present for successful placement. In cases where there has been severe bone loss, procedures such as bone graft and sinus lift (in the upper jaw) are done prior to implant placement.
